Tech qualifies to NCGA Nationals - Zimmerman voted ECAC Freshman of the Year

For the first time since 1997 and the subsequent qualification procedure changes, MIT qualified to the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championships by virtue of their best-ever third place finish at the ECAC/East Regional Championship.  Tech participated as a team in the 2004 Championship, but was granted entrance into the competition by virtue of being the host school.  Along with the team's success, Julia Zimmerman reaped the rewards of a fantastic rookie season by being voted the ECAC Freshman Gymnast of the Year by the membership coaches, a first-ever recognition for an MIT student-athlete.  Complete ECAC Results

Zimmerman - ECAC All-Around Gymnast of the Week (3/5/06)

Julia Zimmerman - MIT
Freshman, Chicago, Ill.

Zimmerman won the bars (9.3), floor (9.675) and all around (37.95) this past weekend against Brockport in an away competition on Saturday, March 4. This is her highest all around score to date and her vault score of 9.6 (2nd place) is a new MIT record.  Zimmerman has definitely proven herself as a consistent performer as a freshman and leads all Division III all-arounds in the rankings.  Perhaps the most significant fact of all is that Julia has accomplished this while competing with a bone chip in her neck.

Zimmerman - ECAC All-Around Gymnast of the Week (2/19/06)

Julia Zimmerman – MIT
Freshman, Chicago, Ill.

In an away meet at Rhode Island College on February 19, Zimmerman enjoyed the best day of her young college career by sweeping all four events and the all-around, matching the accomplishment turned in by one of her teammates the week before. Her 37.75 all-around score is 6th best in MIT school history and it helped to increase her lead in the National Rankings as the top all-arounder in Division III gymnastics so far this season.

Harrison - ECAC All-Around Gymnast of the Week (2/12/06)

Sophia becomes the third MIT gymnast to be honored by the ECAC this season.  Press release is below.

All-Around Gymnast of the Week
Sophia Harrison - MIT
Sophomore, Laguna Hills, CA

Sophia was sidelined her entire freshman year recovering from a career threatening tricep tear. She spent 18 months working extremely hard to come back this season only to be slowed down by a pair of strained Achilles' tendons. She was not in the line-up as an all-arounder at the beginning of Saturday's competition against Division II Southern Connecticut State University and Rhode Island College. In fact, she hadn't been able to flip a vault or do any tumbling since she re-aggravated the injury two weeks ago. After winning the first three events in the meet, Vault with a 9.425, Bars with a 9.25 and Beam with a 9.50, the decision was made to allow Sophia to attempt to warm-up floor with hopes of completing the all-around. All she did was put up a personal best 9.70 for the clean sweep of all four events and the all-around (another personal best 37.875) in helping MIT to only it's second win ever over Division II Southern Connecticut while posting the highest team score in all of Division III thus far this year - 182.525.

Zimmerman - ECAC Rookie of the Week (1/22/06)

For the second week in a row, an MIT gymnast has been named as Conference Gymnast of the week.  The ECAC recognizes female gymnasts in three different categories: Rookie, Specialist (individual who does not compete all-Around) and All-Around Gymnast of the Week.

Rookie of the Week
Julia Zimmerman - MIT

Freshman, Chigaco, IL

Julia got off to a great start in her debut as a collegiate gymnast by winning the all-around in each of MIT's first three competitions. On Saturday, hosting Ithaca College and Division II University of Bridgeport, she led the field with a 36.90. Julia also finished second on bars (9.35) and beam (9.375). Her early season success has her ranked as the top All-Arounder and Beam performer in all of Division III. Julia is an Aeronautics and Astronautics major at MIT.

Trowbridge - ECAC All-Around Gymnast of the Week (1/15/06)

All-Around Gymnast of the Week
Sarah Trowbridge - MIT

Sophomore, Boulder, CO

In a Saturday quadrangular hosted by Division II West Chester University and including SUNY-Cortland and Rhode Island College Sarah was the only all-arounder in the meet to hit 4 for 4 in this early season competition. She upgraded her balance beam routine which she hit for a 9.25 and a third place finish. She also unveiled a brand new Geinger on bars and also finished third on that event with an 8.75. A solid vault and floor exercise routines helped her to third place in the all-around with a 35.725. Her consistency was instrumental in MIT's first-ever win over West Chester University and conference foe SUNY-Cortland. Sarah is a Physics major at MIT.
