Tables Throughout SAAW
Monday-Friday, April 11-15, 2011
In order to raise awareness and reach as many members of the MIT community as possible, we will have tables set up around campus every day during SAAW. The tables will be used to give out free SAAW t-shirts (while supplies last), provide an opportunity for those interested to make shirts for the MIT Clothesline project, allow students to fill out personalized cards to send along with White Ribbons to their male friends, and information on all of SAAW's events and MIT's resources. There will also be one person who is knowledgeable about sexual assault at every table, so feel free to ask questions.

MIT Clothesline Project
The Clothesline Project was started in Cape Cod, MA in order to provide a visual display of the prevalence and severity of violence against women. Since its inception, it has been used around the state, and groups across the country have started their own version of the Clothesline Project. This year, we are beginning the MIT Clothesline Project and will be displaying shirts created by the MIT community, including survivors, those who know survivors, or those who wish to help end sexual violence. Shirt designs vary widely and can be brief stories of sexual violence, reactions to sexual assault by survivors or others, or calls to end sexual violence (or anything you might think of!). We just ask that no identifying information is included on any of the shirts. The community involvement and individual creativity around the issue of sexual violence is really at the core of what makes this project so great.

MIT White Ribbon Project
White Ribbon Day is an event that occurs around the world at various times but always includes the same activities: men pledge to become part of ending violence against women and wear white ribbons to demonstrate their dedication to this cause. Massachusetts' White Ribbon Day took place on March 3rd this year, and many people showed their support at the State House in addition to displaying the signature white ribbons.

We are bringing this project to MIT for Sexual Assault Awareness Week and spreading it in two ways:

(1) Duane de Four, Program Manager of Violence Prevention and Response, will be reaching out to fraternities, athletic teams, and other men's groups to encourage their involvement and ask them to wear ribbons during Sexual Assault Awareness Week.

(2) Additionally, there will be white ribbons at the SAAW tables on Monday and Tuesday so people can send them to their male friends along with a personalized message asking them to wear their white ribbons during Sexual Assault Awareness Week.

Small Residence Parties
We are hosting movie and t-shirt making parties at residences throughout campus in the weeks leading up to SAAW. These parties will consist of a viewing of the short film, The Line, a brief discussion, dinner and an opportunity to create t-shirts for the MIT Clothesline Project. We also hope that these parties will provide an informal opportunity to ask questions or talk to VPR advocates if necessary.

Parties scheduled thus far:
Sigma Kappa -- Sunday, April 3rd, 7:30pm
Ashdown -- Thursday, April 7th, 7:00pm in the 5th floor lounge
Chi Phi -- Sunday, April 10th, 5:00pm
Sidney Pacific -- Monday, April 11th, 7:00pm in the SP Seminar Room
Westgate -- Tuesday, April 12th, 8:00pm
McCormick -- Tuesday, April 12th, 8:00pm (for dessert!)

If you are interested in bringing a party to your dorm or residence, let us know! Contact Kelley at adam@med.mit.edu or 617-253-1318.

Big Movie Night
Wednesday April 13, 2011
6-120
7:00pm

We will be showing Speak (2004), starring Kristen Stewart, Michael Angarano, and Robert John Burke. This film is about a girl who experiences a "blurred trauma" during the summer before entering high school, and how she deals with the aftermath of this experience. We are excited to show Speak this year, since it is a major motion picture that tastefully touches on the impact that sexual assault can have on a survivor's life. There will be a discussion facilitated by a sexual violence expert following the film.

Take Back The Night
Thursday, April 14, 2011
Lobby 10
7:00pm

Take Back the Night (TBTN) is a national event that was started in 1978 with the goal of providing community members an opportunity to publicly assert their right to be free from violence, and to break the silence around violence by sharing their own experiences. TBTN at MIT consists of survivors, those who know survivors, and those concerned with ending sexual violence, gathering in a semi-public place to share their experiences with violence. Come support survivors of sexual assault at MIT - it affects us all. Share your own stories, or just come to be there for and listen to others.
