about [ SUMMER HOUSING ]
"I consider WILG MIT's hidden or not-so-hidden
treasure, a place of serenity amid the creative but
occasionally wearing chaos of the campus, an oasis of
delicious smells, comfortable clothes, lively talk,
kindness, sociability, and the abundant good will that
sustains its small, highly functional, clean and
organized, welcoming and nurturing community for all
its diverse, vibrant, and extraordinary independent
women."
The Women's Independent Living Group (WILG) is one of the few all-women housing options at MIT. We're an independent living group that houses about 45 residents. WILG was founded with the belief that a group of hard-working women can manage their own house, and we've been doing just that for over 30 years.
Our house is a five-story renovated apartment building with a mix of single and walk-through double rooms. On the first floor, we have a TV room, dining room, and industrial-sized kitchen with open pantry (read: all the pancakes, granola bars and lucky charms you could ever want). We also have a smaller kitchen on the fourth floor which is perfect for making breakfast or snacks. We have a patio for sunny days, and newly renovated family-style bathrooms with bathtubs for all your bubble bath needs. Visit the house page for a virtual tour of WILG.
Part of living at WILG means having responsibilities that include an hour of kitchen and house cleaning per week, as well as house meetings twice a month. At the end of August, we have a five day Work Week where we clean our house, do some painting, and work on assorted repair projects.
Our members are actively involved in varsity sports, volunteer activities, and theater and music groups. As a house, we have many different events over the course of the year, such as socials, mixers, formals, and retreats. We go camping, visit Walden Pond, go to the ballet and have tea at the Ritz. We also have a fabulous resident advisor who organizes study breaks, as well as a faculty advisor who takes us to Dim Sum and cooks us gourmet meals. At MIT, we're famous for our baking skills: look for us on the first day of class when we give away thousands (and, yes, we do mean thousands) of free homemade cookies.
WILG is a seven minute walk from campus, right near the Central Square T-Stop. We are across the street from a major grocery chain, Toscanini's ice cream and lots of restaurants, clubs and coffee shops. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our rush chairs at wilg-rush[at]mit.edu. They'll be happy to give you more information. If your parents have any questions or concerns about WILG, have them check out the Page for Parents.
