Thomas DeFrantz earned his PhD from the Department of Performance Studies at NYU in 1997, and joined the faculty of MIT that year. His area of expertise is the performed African America arts, and he has published essays on African American concert dance, social dance, and theater. He is editor of "Dancin Man Drums: Excavations in African American Dance" and has written dance features for the New York Village Voice. He serves as archivist fo the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and organizes the dance history program at the Ailey school. Professo DeFrantz also choreographs and directs musical plays. He recently choreographe "Paul Robeson, All-American," a new play for children by Ossie Davis, and collaborated with Ballet Hispanico on "Border Crossings," an art-in-education program which tours nationwide. He is active with the Theater Offensive of Boston, who will produce his original musical play "Queer Theory: A Musical Travesty" in 2006. He is a
member of the Drama League of New York, the Dance Critics
Association, and serves on the editorial board of the Society of
Dance History Scholars.
