About us

The MIT Student Furniture Exchange (FX), a service project of the MIT Women's League since 1958, sells used furniture and household goods at bargain prices and is open to the MIT, Harvard, Suffolk, and Boston University communities. Customers must show a valid university ID from MIT, Harvard, Suffolk or Boston University in order to make a purchase. The FX provides a dual service since all profits benefit the MIT Women's League Scholarship Fund.

Inventory

Many beautiful one of a kind furniture pieces are available at the Furniture Exchange. Below is a very small sampling of our current inventory. Although every effort is made to show unsold items, pictured items may be sold since our inventory is constantly changing. The best way to know what is available is to visit the store. In addition to furniture we have an extensive stock of glassware and tableware. Click on any picture to enlarge it, and use the browser's back button to return to this page.

Donations

inside FX

In order to continue this valuable service, the FX is always in need of donations of good, useable furniture, including sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, desks, beds, futons, dressers, cabinets, lamps, rugs, small appliances, cooking utensils, dishes, children's items, bikes, and more. If you are moving and can't take everything with you, or if you are just in the mood to update some of your household furnishings, we will happily accept donations of your items in good condition. All donations are tax-deductible and arrangements can be made for large items to be picked up.

Volunteers

Run by volunteers, the FX is always looking for people willing to volunteer 3 or more hours a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm, but the need is greatest during the afternoon. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, from students to retirees to wives of international visitors, and all find it to be a pleasurable experience. Volunteers are needed to help as sales consultants, assist with inventory pricing, arrange and display merchandise, and keep things tidy.

Additional Information

Payment
The Furniture Exchange accepts cash, check, Visa & Mastercard. A university ID must be shown to make a purchase. Due to our limited storage space, all purchases must be removed from the Exchange within 30 days or they will forfeited and half the purchase price will be refunded.

Deliveries
Delivery of purchased items can be arranged for an additional fee. The Furniture Exchange uses Your Move, Inc. (617-623-8545). They have been working with the FX for over 10 years and their rates are very reasonable. For convenience, the customer makes these arrangements directly with the mover.
