About us

The MIT Student Furniture Exchange (FX), a service project of the MIT Women's League since 1958, sells used furniture and household goods at bargain prices and is open to the MIT, Harvard, Suffolk, and BU communities. Customers must show a valid university ID in order to make a purchase. All proceeds benefit the MIT Women's League Scholarship Fund, a growing endowment that provides annual financial support to undergraduate women at MIT.

The FX is celebrating 58 years of service this year!

We will be closed Tuesday, July 4th and Thursday, July 6th. (We will be open Sat. July 1st.) We will reopen July 11th at 10am. Have a safe and happy holiday!

The Furniture Exchange is located at 350 Brookline St. (WW15) in Cambridge, where Brookline Street meets Memorial Drive near the B.U. Bridge.

Public Transportation

The FX is about a 15-minute walk down Brookline Street from the Red Line Central Square station. Alternatively, the #47 bus inbound from the Central Square T Stop travels down Pearl St. and stops at the corner of Granite St. and Brookline St. The FX is directly across the street.



Pick-up of Donations

Arrangements can be made for the pick-up of many large items or for a substantial donation only. We cannot send movers for a single item or two.


In order to continue this valuable service, the FX is always in need of donations of furniture and household items. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept used mattresses & box springs, drop-side cribs, used stuffed animals, clothes, and older-style televisions. All donations are tax-deductible.

How the process works is that we ask:
1. for you to let us know a general idea of where you live
2. to let us know if the items are on the first floor, 2nd, etc. If items are above the first floor, please let us know if there is an elevator or if it is a walk-up.
3. If you can send pictures of the bigger items so we can have a general idea of the condition of the items.
4. Once we get this, we can put you in touch with the movers if we think it is not too cost prohibitive (we pay the movers to pick up donations).

The Furniture Exchange accepts cash, checks, and Visa & Mastercard. A university ID must be shown to make a purchase.



Delivery of purchased items can be arranged for an additional fee. The Furniture Exchange uses Your Move, Inc. (617-623-8545 or you can submit a request online here). They have been working with the FX for over 10 years and their rates are very reasonable. For convenience, the customer makes these arrangements directly with the mover.

Run by volunteers, the FX is always looking for people willing to volunteer two or more hours a week. Volunteers are needed to help as sales consultants, assist with inventory pricing, arrange and display merchandise, rehab furniture, and to keep things tidy.
