About us

The MIT Student Furniture Exchange (FX), a service project of the MIT Women's League since 1958, sells used furniture and household goods at bargain prices and is open to the MIT, Harvard, Suffolk, and Boston University communities. Customers must show a valid university ID from MIT, Harvard, Suffolk or Boston University in order to make a purchase. The FX provides a dual service since all profits benefit the MIT Women's League Scholarship Fund.

Accessible by public transportation, the FX is about a 10-minute walk down Brookline Street from the Red Line Central Square station. fancychairInventory

Many beautiful one-of-a-kind furniture pieces are available at the Furniture Exchange. Below is a very small sampling of our current inventory. Although every effort is made to show unsold items, pictured items may be sold since our inventory is constantly changing. The best way to know what is available is to visit the store. In addition to furniture we have an extensive stock of glassware and tableware. Click on any picture to enlarge it, and use the browser's back button to return to this page.

Donations

In order to continue this valuable service, the FX is always in need of donations of good, usable furniture, including sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, desks, bed frames, futon frames, dressers, cabinets, lamps, rugs, small appliances, cooking utensils, dishes, children's items, bikes, and more. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept used mattresses, box springs, drop-side cribs, used stuffed animals, and older style televisions. If you are moving and can't take everything with you, or if you are just in the mood to update some of your household furnishings, we will happily accept donations in good condition. All donations are tax-deductible and arrangements can be made for the pick-up of large items or a substantial donation.

Volunteers

Run by volunteers, the FX is always looking for people willing to volunteer 2 or more hours a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm and on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to 1pm, but the need is greatest during the afternoon. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Volunteers are needed to help as sales consultants, assist with inventory pricing, arrange and display merchandise, and keep things tidy.

The Furniture Exchange accepts cash, check, Visa & Mastercard. A university ID must be shown to make a purchase. Due to our limited storage space, all purchases must be removed from the Exchange within 2 weeks or they will be forfeited and half the purchase price will be refunded.

Deliveries
Delivery of purchased items can be arranged for an additional fee. The Furniture Exchange uses Your Move, Inc. (617-623-8545).
