The MIT Student Furniture Exchange (FX) is the destination for students looking to furnish their living spaces inexpensively. It sells used furniture and housewares at unbeatable prices, and the win-win is this: all FX profits go to the Women's League Scholarship Fund, a growing endowment to support undergraduate women at MIT.
Over a half-century-old, this League service project has come a long way since its beginnings in the old Westgate apartments where it served only MIT. Now located in a large warehouse at 350 Brookline Street (WW15) near the BU Bridge, it manages a constantly changing inventory that comes from donations and estate sales, and it serves the communities of MIT, as well as Harvard, Suffolk and Boston Universities. A valid ID from one of these schools is required to shop. The FX accepts credit cards, and it can put customers in touch with moving services for larger items.
The FX is staffed by volunteers and is always looking for more to help unpack, price goods, and assist with sales, all while meeting interesting people. The FX welcomes donations of used furniture and housewares, which are tax-deductible and for which a receipt is supplied (for income tax purposes).
FX hours are: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 4 pm; and the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 1 pm. Contact them at 617.253.4293, or email email@example.com.
