Site selection

The Outdoor Classroom, a living laboratory planted and maintained by students as part of their curriculum, is located at a vacant lot adjacent to the corner of 48th Street and Fairmount Street. Students at Sulzberger school can easily reach their classroom within a minute safely. Moreover, they can see the progress of their plants from their school windows. Not only can students at Sulzberger school use this site, but also students from other school in the vicinity of Mill Creek neighborhood.

Permission for use secured

Sulzberger Middle school, will take care of this plant nursery by assuming that the teachers and students have a right to develop this site and the School-Community Association also has a right to make use of this project.

The Program Promotion

As is mentioned earlier, Sulzberger teachers and the School-Community Association are clients of the project and funding for the project comes from two sources: a federal urban forestry demonstration program and local public arts program. They will promote this project by telling people in the neighborhood and surrounding areas to come and see it. They will then educate people who want to know more about plant as parts of their activities. They use red maple as the main street trees to stimulate a feeling in the people passing by.
