Specifications
All trees should be planted and replanted in early spring while dormant.
Necessary soil amendments as follows:
Supplement all existing soil with sand quantity equal to 20% of total soil volume (to depth of roto-tiller).
Amend soil in each individual tree pit with fertility mixture maximum quantity equal to 5% soil volume in tree pit. Fertility mixture consists of 50% peat moss, 25% rotted oak leaf mold and 25% sandy loam.
Use a cover crop during periods prior to tree planting to improve soil conditions. Possible crops include the following, with type chosen dependent upon the time of year needed and availability of seed:
Hairy vetch; spread 3-4 pecks per acre
Sweet clover; spread 10-12 pounds per acre
Soya bean; spread 2 bushels per acre
Stake all trees in nursery for support if necessary.
Irrigate all nursery trees with a garden hose.
Tamp center of all tree pits to a firm mound to avoid root rot (the 'tea cup' syndrome).
Transplanting notes:
Transplant all trees bare root.
Any tree which sustains 40% or more root damage will die.
Cleanly prune all damaged or diseased limbs and roots.
Soak all roots over night before planting.
Do not allow roots to dry out during installation process.
Schedule of transplanting as follows:
Platanus occidentalis -- after 5 years in nursery. Relocation to be along streets with allot of room and no utility wires.
Acer rubrum 'Autumn Flame' -- after 3- 4 years in nursery. Relocation to be along streets with less room.
Kalmia latifolia -- after 5 years in nursery. Relocation to be along pedestrian footpaths and in public/ semi-public open spaces with shade.
Diospyros virginiana -- after 3 years in nursery. Relocation to be along pedestrian footpaths and in public/ semi- public areas with full sun.
