Detention Area

The detention basin and the outdoor classroom are located between the school building and the playground. This area offers a series of spaces which will be used for a classroom, individual quiet moments, having lunch in a group or tucking oneself in a corner with a burger and a book. Upon entering the site from the west end, the first area encountered is a lawn with a channel running through it. It overlooks a lily pond. Seating spaces along the edge of the detention basin are used to create the effect of a meandering river with varying widths of the water channel. Planting beds line the walkway creating a series of shaded and well lit spaces.

Water Play Area

The water play area is intentionally designed as an informal space sustaining an interest in the discovery of new nooks and corners. The first encounter with water is through a cascade and a 'chadar' which not only creates different water movements but different sounds as well. The rapid tumbling of water disappears under the soft rounded stones where one encounters small bubblers.

To childrens' delight, if one puts a foot on a bubbler in one corner, a strong jet of water comes out of the other corner, then if you just put a foot on the previous bubbler, water shoots right next to you. This provides an interesting game of anticipation which bubbler would come alive next.

The next space is a paved area with several hopscotch patterns made using paving stones. The water depth is 2 inches giving hopscotch a new dimension. It can also be used when the water has been turned off. People can cross over to the other side to go to the swimming pool or sit on the shaded grassy area and read a book against the backdrop of squeals and laughter.

The water has serene quality here and the silence is gently broken by a water pool cascading into one another and finally into the detention basin. Walking along the water edge, one can either go into detention area or carry on south into a lawn crossing over a wooden deck beyond the sculpture marking termination of North - South axis.
