site-meaning

The north east corner lot of 43rd Street and Haverford Avenue offers an uncommon vista of West Philadelphia facing University City. Its slightly raised elevation in the landscape largely determined by the streets and buildings creates feelings of separation and surveyance- evoking senses of power and vulnerability.

Proposal:

Students will grow and plant trees in their environment at a location of their choice within the boundaries of a fragmented grid of the city streets. This imposed grid is determined by both the existing grid and the design of the nursery. The form derived from the nursery includes south facing greenhouses/cold frames, loading/transit ways, and retaining walls that give the nursery physical definition. Students will be responsible for the initial stages of a trees life including winter and summer care of branched whips, as well as nursery planting.
