SHIFTING GROUND

The popular adage "on solid ground" is oftentimes a misleading statement.   Much of the earth's crust is not solid at all, but a layer of hard rock floating over the fluid magma of the earth's interior.  Soils are not solid either.  Small particles change position depending on what forces are exerted upon them.  Sometimes seemingly solid ground gives way and giant holes appear in the ground.
