Writing and speaking
are important components of an MIT education. Many MIT alumni and
alumnae have reported that even in their scientific and engineering
careers, they spend 25-35% of their time is spent writing and find
themselves making frequent oral presentations. MIT has recognized
the importance of communication in several ways, and the following
are some of the key MIT sites:
- Subjects
- The Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies offers many writing
courses. For non-native speakers of English, the ESL department
offers several courses as well.
- Writing Coops
and Practica
- These are other forms of instruction in writing and speaking.
-
Writing Requirement - To help students prepare for their careers,
MIT has a Writing Requirement.
-
Communication Intensive (CI) courses - Another way of helping
students prepare themselves for life in and beyond MIT, many departments
offer CI courses that feature a writing and speaking component.
-
Library - MIT's Libraries offer many useful services and sites.
- Rhetoric Sites-- Several sites collected by MIT's library staff for Dr. Strang's course in Rhetoric (21W.747)
- Sites by Students
- Several student activities and sites include writing and speaking,
such as Student
Publications, Debate,
Toastmasters,
and Arts at MIT.
