Information for Non-Native Speakers of English
All students, including students whose
primary language is not English, are strongly encouraged
to take the online FEE over the summer.
When students register for the online FEE, they will be
asked if English is their first language, and if not, whether
they speak and write English as fluently as they speak and
write their first language.
After the online
FEE is scored, staff in the Program in English Language
Studies (ELS) will review the essays of students who receive
scores of "Writing Subject Required." ELS staff will determine
whether a student must take a regular expository writing
class (CI-HW), or a writing class specifically designed for bilingual
students (21F.222).
Students whose primary language is not English, who do
not take the online FEE over the summer, must take the English
Diagnostic Review (EDR) during Orientation, instead of the
make-up FEE. The EDR is offered at the same time as
the make-up FEE.
