For the past 3 years, the MIT Women’s Tennis Team has started their fall season off with a win over Wheaton College. This year was no different. Last Saturday, the team aggressively put Wheaton away with a 9-0 victory in the first match of the school year.
They took a dominant lead early on in doubles action with Koo/Egloff winning 8-4. Despite having new doubles partners, the team of Rayej/ Konowich won 9-7 and likewise, Tien/Cichon put on an aggressive front to win 8-0. Ni/Lee won easily 8-3 and Nelson/Arzeno used their offensive net game to put their opponents away with an 8-5 victory.
The MIT women were unremitting as they continued into their singles matches. Koo used a combination of aggression and placement to easily win 6-1, 6-3. Alongside her, Rayej swiftly walked off with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. On the next courts, Tien and Egloff were both victorious at 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2. The #5 and #6 singles matches were both grinders. After a relatively easy first set win, Cichon had to put it all together in a tough second set to win 6-0, 7-6 (5 in the tiebreaker), while nearby, Konowich came back from a first set loss to ultimately win 3-6, 7-6 (3 in the tie breaker), 10-6 (super tiebreaker). Despite well-placed shots, Desieno lost 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 (super tiebreaker), and Lee lost 9-8 in her pro-set. Ni rattled off well-placed shots to win 8-1 and Arzeno also finished it off 8-3.
Coach Carol Matsuzaki on the match: “This was a good start to our fall season. I think this match gave us a lot of things to work on.”
The team will continue their hard work with the weeks ahead packed with matches. They will battle it out against Babson College on the MIT home courts this Friday at 4 PM and then travel to Smith College for an early Saturday match.
