xTalks: Digital Discourses

Dear Colleagues, here's the schedule of our early fall events. Hope to see you there.

Monday Oct 6, 3-4 pm, rm 4-270: "MOOCs - Open Education with Old & New Learners"
Please join us for a discussion with Professor, CIO and Librarian Jeff Haywood of the University of Edinburgh and Dr Lori Breslow of TLL to explore new issues emerging in online education environments. Who are MOOC learners now? What changes we are seeing in their backgrounds and intentions? Where we might take this in terms of widening access to higher education? Where do we go beyond MOOCs? How to deliver open education at scale?

Tuesday Oct 21, 2-3 pm, rm 3-133: "A Panel Discussion on Scholarly Annotation"
David Karger, Kurt Fendt, Phil Desenne, Jamie Folsom and others will contribute to a panel on scholarly annotation. There is increased focus on collaborative learning, in the context of online learning environments where multiple individuals create community forums which facilitate engagement and connection. This expert panel will discuss how people engage and collaborate online, what impacts annotations have for assessment and what features of annotation tools encourage collaboration and enhance learning.

An additional talk of interest:
Tuesday Sept 23, 4:30-6 pm, rm 4-231, ODL director Sanjay Sarma in a panel on Digital Learning: Improving Access to Learning and Holistic Educational Outcomes, sponsored by the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values.
