In 2004 I co-founded and led a FIRST Robotics team named Mortorq. The team consisted of approximately 40 students from Beverly Hills High School, as well as a number of mentors from a variety of fields of expertise. The robot's solid and reliable design, coupled with the strong community outreach initiatives we employed, won us both the Rookie Inspiration Award and the Rookie All Star Award, bringing us to the Nationals competition.
A few interesting features to notice on the robot are the arm lift mechanism, which was salvaged from a car window driver, the gravity actuated locking arm extender, and the glowing skull with Mickey Mouse ears and hat on the center pneumatic piston. The Mickey Mouse ears were in honor of Walt Disney Imagineering, which was a major sponsor for our team.
