Late that night as the camp sleeps, Gaius awakens because of a little noise that stops. Something is amiss in the next tent over (Sasha's). He quietly gets up to investigate. Lucia, in the tent on the other side of Sasha, also awakens and emerges to find Gaius peering into the darkness of Sasha's tent. He doesn't see anything... but as they whisper to each other there's a ripping noise. Turning back they see a shadowy figure just leaving through a cut in the back of Sasha's tent. Clearly the thing to do is run after it through the camp, but whoever it is is fast and agile, and they lose it as it makes for the woods.
This noise has awakened Baba and Sasha, who regroup in Sasha's tent. Sasha starts looking to see if anything is missing, but quickly finds that this isn't the case... instead someone has added some sharp little knives and a black uniform to her luggage.
Meanwhile, Lucia is trying to get the guards to go look in the woods after the figure, but doesn't speak their language. Gaius, turning back, spots another figure running off from another tent, followed by a cry: "The General has been murdered!" He takes off after the fleeing figure and magic missiles him with a wand, catching up with the fallen man in black just inside the tree-line. Some guards are soon there, and when they arrive the ninja (well, he is wearing black clothes and a black mask, might as well call a spade a spade) launches himself at them saying in Duman "Don't worry brother, I'll hold them off!" Gaius doesn't understand what he said, but the guards think maybe the brother meant was Gaius and when they get back to the King, now awake, Gaius is taken into custody and beaten about a bit.
Ivar meanwhile has awoken and tracked the first fugitive a bit, but discovers that the ninja left the ground and ran among the tree branches, thwarting his tracking. He returns to the others at their tent, and they decide to go quietly when the guards show up. They're held in the big feasting tent while their luggage is searched, and early in the morning have to provide an excuse for all the suspicious items. Some, like the daggers, some encrypted notes, and the black Imperial-cut uniforms, they claim were planted. Others, like the incendiary device they provide implausible but not impossible reasons for - "it's to deter thieves!" - "it's a sleep aid" - and so on.
Camp is struck and everyone heads back to the capital. The team is clearly under watch, though they are allowed to keep their weapons (save the magic missile wand). Lucia spots some unicorn hair in a bush on the way back and pockets it, determining that it's from a western breed of unicorn. Back in the capital, it is decided that they're under suspicion but not yet to be thrown in the dungeon - they are told they must stay in the city, with guards following them while the King makes up his mind about what happened.
At their inn, they have a long message that contains a short message indicating that a group of unicorns was seen crossing the plains of the northern Empire, with riders, heading into Gravla, and maybe they should check that out. A little scrying by Lucia is able to find the unicorn whose hair she has - in a rundown barn somewhere, with other unicorns and some people close by - but not find out where the unicorns were the previous night. They also come under watch by some sort of drab parroty bird that Ivar attempts to catch as it perches outside their window, but it escapes. With little else to do, they set up a routine so that people know they will be at the baths in case they want to contact them discreetly, and submit a request to go on a day trip from the city.
