MIT's Biology Department has 69 distinguished faculty — some of whom hold joint appointments in the departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Chemistry, or Civil and Environmental Engineering. Some faculty are also members of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, the Picower Institute of Learning and Memory, the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the Broad Institute, or the Biological Engineering Division (BE). Fifteen Biology faculty are also members of the Whitehead Institute.

Biology is proud to be the home of four Nobel Laureates, 29 National Academy of Sciences members, 12 Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, and 12 Emeriti faculty.

Current research in the Department includes the areas of cellular, developmental and molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology, classical and molecular genetics, plant molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, neurobiology, and computational and systems biology. Often, the research projects of any one laboratory involve more than one of these categories.

A complete list of the Biology faculty can be accessed either alphabetically or by area of research. These pages contain links to each faculty member's research summary and more information.
