How to get to the Fells

Start: 77 Massachusetts Avenue

End: Governor's Avenue Entrance to the Fells

1. 77 Massachusetts Avenue towards Vassar St.
2. Right onto Vassar
3. At intersection, slight left onto Fulkerson St.
4. At light, left onto Broadway
5. Next right onto Hampshire St.
6. Hampshire St. turns into Beacon St.
7. Beacon curls right at its end. Turn left onto Somerville Ave.
8. You are in Porter Square. At shopping plaza take a right turn onto White St.
9. At Do Not Enter sign take a left into the shopping plaza.
10. Exit the plaza near the Star Market entrance onto Elm St. by turning left.
11. At light next to Domino's Pizza / Wing Works, turn right.
12. Continue on this short road (Cutter Ave). At fork turn left onto Highland Ave.
13. Move into right lane. At traffic light, turn right. You are on College Ave.
14. At stop sign, yield to rotary traffic. When possible, enter rotary.
15. Take second exit out of rotary.
16. Proceed on street, up a hill. Should take you past Tufts.
17. At stop sign, proceed straight.
18. Immediately after overpass, take a left into the Tufts maintenance grounds.
19. This section is like a bowl. First you go downhill, then you proceed straight, up short, steep rooty hill.
20. Take first right. Proceed up short hill, then downhill, then there's a stop sign.
21. Right at stop sign. Immediate left. Proceed until the next stop sign.
22. Proceed straight (well, almost straight, it is actually a slight diagnonal to your right).
23. At stop sign, you should see that it is a one way to the right. Do not turn right. Proceed straight into the parking lot of the apartment complex. Proceed straight to busy intersection. Press the "walk" button. The traffic lights are timed to break up the flow of traffic, so sometimes it turns red by itself.
24. Cross the crosswalk. Proceed towards the footbridge over the skunky looking water and cross it.
25. At the end of the bridge, you come upon another street. Cross it to get onto Governor's Ave. Again, it is a slight diagonal, this time to your left.
26. Proceed up the hill. At the light, go straight.
27. Up another hill. At stop sign you will see the Governor's Ave entrance to the Fells.

The trails are marked with a red sign roughly 3"x4" that states "NEMBA Mountain Bike Loop." Sometimes these signs are broken or missing so I definitely suggest you explore the woods well before dark. Bikes are only allowed on the Mountain Bike Loop and fireroads within the park.
