Annual Summer Sail Dedicated to the Memory of Jake Peirson

Every year, students admitted to the MIT/WHOI Joint Program are welcomed to the world of oceanography with a 10-day summer cruise in the North Atlantic. The cruise is operated by Sea Education Association (www.sea.edu) that also runs the popular “Sea Semester ” program.

This year the annual summer sail for MIT/WHOI Joint Program students was dedicated to the memory of Jake Peirson who passed away in 2006. Peirson had been at WHOI since 1967 and had served as assistant dean, associate dean, registrar and played a crucial role in the formation of the Joint Program.

Participants of the 2008 S.E.A. Jake Peirson Summer Cruise sailed to the North Atlantic continental shelf break and then further south to study a warm core eddy, onboard SSV Corwith Cramer.
