incomplete).
Foreign players are allowed for the first time in the Greek League. PAOK also
signs Bane Prelevic from Red Star Belgrade as our second foreign player for the
Korac Cup. Not after long, Prelevic gets naturalized and plays in the Greek
League as Greek.

COACHES
John Newman (20-4 season record), is replaced by Costas Politis (6-3 season
record) after a loss to AEK, very close to the end of the regular season.
Newman's replacement was imminent ever since the game in Belgrade.
PRESIDENT
Nikos Vezirtzis for the 5th straight year.
IMPORTANT GAMES & EVENTS
12/10/88 In his first oficial game with PAOK, Bane Prelevic leads PAOK to
a 93-83 win in Villeurbans (Prelevic 29, Jones 29).
1/11/88 PAOK beats Red Star Belgrade 95-85 (Jones 37).
5/11/88 PAOK beats Aris 81-78 for the first time since the 1984 Greek
BOXSCORE [1] Cup final. Prelevic is not allowed to play, but Aris misses
Yannakis who abstains for financial reasons (Jones 30).
Fasoulas says that PAOK is too good a team to be eliminated in
Belgrade.
8/11/88 Just 3 days after the big win, our European dreams fall apart.
Bad officiating forces PAOK to a 76-86 regulation loss to Red
Star in Belgrade (Jones 30). At the tip for the OT, the
official throws the ball towards the Yugoslavian player. Newman
gets furious, steps into the court and pushes the official.
PAOK forfeits the game and Red Star advances to the groups.
11/ 2/89 With a few minutes left PAOK is down 81-82 and Makaras misses
BOXSCORE [2] an easy shot on the fast-break that would put PAOK ahead. On
the counter fast-break, Aris scores and never looks back. With
about 20'' to go PAOK is down 85-88 and Prelevic has a chance to
tie the game with a 3 on the fast-break. But instead he chooses
to take the easy lay-up that brings PAOK within 1. But with no
free-throws for non-shooting fouls (the mandatory shooting of
free-throws has not been implemented yet) all that Aris has to
do is avoid a turnover. Despite the successive fouls by our
players during the last few seconds, PAOK loses 87-88 to Aris,
with both Prelevic and Yannakis playing this time (Jones 30).
11/ 3/89 PAOK loses to AEK 111-112 after 3 OTs (Jones 36, Prelevic 27,
Fasoulas 19). The refs had some terrible calls against PAOK,
but our loose defense that allowed Patavoukas score 36 points
was also responsible for the defeat. After the game Newman is
replaced by Politis.
19/ 4/89 PAOK beats PAO 104-87 in Athens and advances to the PO finals
to face Aris (Jones 31, Korfas 23, Fasoulas 17).
3/ 5/89 Subotic is on fire and PAOK is down 50-58 at halftime. With 6''
BOXSCORE [3] to go PAOK is down 84-86 and Fasoulas has the ball after a miss
by Galis. But he hastes the pass and Thoxakis steals the ball.
PAOK's effort falls short and we lose 84-89 to Aris (Jones 30,
Prelevic 21, Fasoulas 19).
6/ 5/89 PAOK is up 42-37 at halftime but Galis plays one of his best
BOXSCORE [4] games ever against PAOK and Jones does not play well. At a
crucial moment in the second half Fasoulas argues a non-call by
Rigas who charges Fasoulas with a technical that is his 5th
personal foul. Fasoulas gets another consecutive technical,
this time as a bench player, and Aris opens a 19 point lead by
completing a 25-57 run!! PAOK loses again to Aris 75-87 and
Aris is Champion for the 5th straight year (Jones 19).
13/ 5/89 Despite being up by as many as 14 points, PAOK loses again to
BOXSCORE [5] Aris 86-91 in a close game for the final of the Greek Cup
(Jones 29). The year ends in total disappointment.
By beating us in 4 crucial games in a row, Aris proved that they had a better
team. The fast game pace that PAOK used all year long sustaining 100 PPG on
offense was not enough against Aris, especially in close games that are decided
during the last minutes.
