Acadians proclaimed their flag at a "National Convention" held on Prince Edward Island in 1841:
Que le tricolore soit le drapeau national des Acadiens français. Comme marque distinctive de la nationalité acadienne, on placera une étoile, figure de Marie, dans la partie bleue, qui est la couleur symbolique des personnes consacrées à la Vierge Sainte. Cette étoile, Stella Maris, qui doit guider la petite colonie acadienne à travers les orages et les écueils, sera aux couleurs papales pour montrer l'inviolable attachement à la Sainte église, notre mère.
