Remember Yoda? "There is another..." People are starting to reconsider the finances of owning a computer. They are starting to learn that upgrading is no guarantee of function. Companies are the slowest. If a really big corporation (auto industry) announced that everyone was going to open office and to deal with it, then there would be a groundswell in activity. Why they don't is beyond me. They dictate CAD/CAM/CAE software/hardware all the time. It's very clear (and I will revise the discussion to say so explicitly) that the Robinson method, in particular, shouldn't be tested by having it re-evaluate its own training data. If we do that, Robinson will look good, but the test will have no value in predicting the performance of the Robinson method in production, where most messages are new. I'm not very surprised at this; I've always known that using training data for testing was a dangerous expedient. It's impressive _how_ dangerous it turns out to be in the case of Robinson's approach, though. Microsoft antitrust decision due today
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said she will release her ruling on the proposed Microsoft antitrust settlement after the U.S. stock markets close this afternoon. Kollar-Kotelly indicated she would rule on two matters that have been proceeding on parallel tracks: whether to approve a tentative deal that Microsoft and the U.S. Justice Department inked last fall, and which remedies are appropriate in the separate case being pursued by state attorneys general. Microsoft has been taking steps over the last several months to comply with the terms of the settlement agreement, even before the judge has approved the terms. We will alert you when the judge's ruling is issued.

Wi-Fi getting new security standard
Are security concerns holding you back from adopting 802.11b wireless in your corporate network? The Wireless Fidelity Alliance is pushing for the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) standard as a relacement for the existing Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). WPA will make unauthorized access more difficult by generating new keys for every 10K of data transmitted, which is more secure than WEP's weak fixed-key approach.

Windows VPN software allows attacks
Windows 2000 and Windows XP servers can be attacked through the software ordinarily used to create secure connections to remote workers, Microsoft said late Wednesday. A buffer overflow in the implementation of Point to Point Tunneling Protocol allows attackers to cause any Windows 2000 or Windows XP servers to crash. A patch is available for the bug, which received a "critical" rating from Microsoft. The company also warned of a bug in Windows 2000 that could allow an attacker to sabotage the system via a Trojan horse. With the two new warnings, Microsoft has issued 64 alerts this year.

Hyperthreading a turnoff, so far
Hyperthreading--Intel's a performance-enhancing technology that lets one chip act something like two--has been available on workstations since April, but it's mostly been inactive. HP and Dell, among other PC manufacturers, have been shipping their systems with the function turned off. Their reason: Most software for the workstation market doesn't yet take advantage of the technology. Don't expect anything different when hyperthreading technology arrives on desktops on Nov. 14.

Network modeling tools deliver ROI
Properly designed networks save companies a lot of money by reducing bandwidth costs and deployment time. Network modeling tools can help in that effort by cutting maintenance and operations costs.

The other day I filled up my root partition where eveything is stored and my system crashed/froze. I was able to telnet in and reboot. When it came back up I started moving things off the root partition and onto a separate partition. In the process I somehow hosed my virtual terminals in the corner on the panel and cannot figure out how to get them back. The virtual terminals just disappeared. It may have happened as a result of the crash or in the process of moving things off the root partition ... not sure. Any idea how I can fix this and get my Virtual Terminals back? What happens is that the kiddie scripts scan whole subnets for ip's with known and gross vulnerability signatures. Then they kindly compile a list of interesting IP's, sometimes filtered by the vunerability that the cracker/kiddie is looking for (because that's the one they have the intrusion tools for). Then they just use the intrusion tools on the IP's with the most interesting vulnerability signatures. I haven't yet learned how to control font size, so if I let R put that many data on a smaller canvas, labels get omitted. I tried shrinking it with ImageMagick and ended up trying to draw lines less than a pixel thick, which didn't work too marvellously either. So I guess people without 1600x1200 screens will have to use the scrollbars till I can think of something. (Come to think of it, maybe the par command is what I need to look at...) R is quite frustrating to work with because there's no comprehensive learning documentation. There's an introduction that gets you started, and then there's an alphabetical reference book with all the functions' man pages, many of which are a bit short on detail. For many of the add-on packages, there's nothing but the online help screens. I need a nice big book on how to get things done with R, and it seems nobody's written one yet. As I write this, snow is beginning to hide the grass outside; we're having what Environment Canada calls "flurries heavy at times" and this is one of the times. Fun in prospect. I'd like some feedback from a more knowledgeable statistician than I am, and he'd be an excellent candidate if he undertakes the review. I particularly asked him if he had any comments on the suitability of anova for this kind of data reduction. AFAIK the main prerequisite is that the raw data should be normally distributed, or close to it; the error rates are obviously not normally distributed, but I think they're close enough. My "expertise" is inadequate for me to be completely confident about it, however; all the anova work I've done hitherto has been in areas where the data, or at least a log transform thereof, were unquestionably suitable for anova. There are some more small wording changes and I've fixed a number of places in the scripts where the HTML rendering was swallowing stuff that started with < and a letter. Not quite sure but I think I've caught all of those now. -- | G r e g l a m b | gpg public key: | | http://www.sbc.nu/~glamb | finger greg@sbc.nu | From expert-owner@linux-mandrake.com Fri Nov 1 14:27:20 2002 Return-Path: Delivered-To: smythe@example.com Received: from smtp.mandrake.com (smtp.mandrake.com [63.209.80.248]) by example.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 25CF0280E1 for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 14:27:20 -0500 (EST) Received: from yavin.mandrax.org (moseisley.mandrax.org [63.209.80.226]) by smtp.mandrake.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C4AC83C03; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 11:21:04 -0800 (PST) Received: by yavin.mandrax.org (Postfix, from userid 500) id D30091412D6; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 11:18:23 -0800 (PST) Delivered-To: expert@linux-mandrake.com Received: from felix.monkeynoodle.org (m201-9.dsl.tsoft.com [198.144.201.9]) by smtp1.mandrax.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C7D743E05 for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 11:17:23 -0800 (PST) Received: from chupacabra.monkeynoodle.org (unknown [63.114.26.4]) by felix.monkeynoodle.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3CFDEEB45D for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 11:23:37 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [expert] where's pine? This is very useful; some Linux based firewalls such as Watchguard have a similar feature. But I've noticed that the IP scanning is becoming smarter to get around these blocks. The scanner will touch a few machines, just under the lockout threshold, then try again a few hours or days later. Some blocks won't check multiple IPs so a scanner could jump between a range of IPs and not trigger the alarm with a portscan. ------------=_1036179469-28558-544 Content-Type: text/plain; name="message.footer" Content-Disposition: inline; filename="message.footer" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I'm afraid "think for a second, code for a minute, test for a day; repeat 6 times before you get a small win" is par for the course when trying to push any decent scheme beyond the 80/20 rule (each additional 20% improvement requires 80% of all the effort that went before). > That said, I think the classification stuff has gone about as far as it's > going to go. Yup! Thanks to Sean and especially Mark lately, the non-Windows platforms are a month behind on that too. It's a curious thing about Windows: because it is closed-source, the Windows market is homogenous enough that one major effort there can make millions of happy campers. I still hope that the pop3proxy can do that for non-Windows systems too, and that's the only advice I can offer: find a way to use the proxy instead of pursuing "deep integration" with unbounded dozens of quirky twenty-user email clients. _______________________________________________ Spambayes mailing list Spambayes@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/spambayes From whatsnewnow@eletters1.ziffdavis.com Fri Nov 1 17:26:44 2002 Return-Path: Delivered-To: smythe@example.com Received: from out10smtp7.ddc.dartmail.net (out10smtp7.ddc.dartmail.net [216.73.90.107]) by example.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF985280E1 for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:26:43 -0500 (EST) Received: from CORE10PUMPER2 (unknown [10.21.8.70]) by out10smtp7.ddc.dartmail.net (Postfix) with SMTP id 402385587B5 for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:28:29 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: From: What's New Now from Ziff Davis To: smythe@example.com Subject: Special Edition: Judge Kotar-Kotelly Approves Final Judgment in Microsoft Case Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:28:29 -0500 (EST) ========================================================= -------- WHAT'S NEW NOW -------- Important Stories, Commentary & More from Ziff Davis ========================================================= SPECIAL EDITION November 1, 2002 Vol. 1, No. 17 ========================================================= Special Flash: Judge Kotar-Kotelly approves final judgment in Microsoft Case When something big breaks in the technology industry, What's New Now stops the presses and delivers a special e-mail to you, so you're always on top of the important stories... It seems like this case has gone on forever -- and now that technology has advanced, it's almost much ado about nothing. Judge approves most of MS-DOJ settlement

In what Microsoft watchers termed no big surprise, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly accepted most of the proposed settlement in the long-running antitrust case.

The settling parties have until Nov. 8 to refile the settlement with changes requested by the judge.

The accepted settlement prevents Microsoft from participating in exclusionary, anti-competitive deals; requires uniform contract terms for computer manufacturers; and allows manufacturers and customers to remove access to some Microsoft features. Among other provisions, it also stipulates that Microsoft release technical data to software developers to help them optimize products for Microsoft's platforms.

Over the last several months, Microsoft has been complying with some of the provisions of the settlement. For example, in September, the company released Windows XP Service Pack 1, which introduced a control that allows manufacturers to hide access to the Internet Explorer browser, Windows Messenger, Windows Media Player, Outlook Express, and Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine.

The sanctions will be enforced for at least five years unless extended by the court. Microsoft officials said the company was reviewing the decision. The nine states and District of Columbina who dissented from the proposed agreement may still appeal the judge's ruling.

We will provide updates throughout the day and coming week.

I just complain. I'd like to second the pop3proxy architecture as the way forward. If it weren't for the fact that virus scanners weren't already sometimes adding both pop3 and smtp proxies to the mix on Windows, I would have pushed (er, whined) in favor of that architecture even for Outlook. (There is also the problem of how to configure proxies for the case of multiple pop3 accounts). You can mangle the host, user, and password together in a horrible looking user name, but it is really a pain. Nonetheless, it has a relatively clean API, and the same architecture could be used to proxy SMTP output traffic, catching messages to ham@wherever and spam@wherever, in order to talk to the training system. The same code then might run pretty happily on both the client and the server, depending on the needs of the installation. -- Sean _______________________________________________ Spambayes mailing list Spambayes@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/spambayes From glamb@dynagen.on.ca Fri Nov 1 17:55:48 2002 Return-Path: Delivered-To: smythe@example.com Received: from csl2.consultronics.on.ca (csl2.consultronics.on.ca [204.138.93.2]) by example.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F369280E1 for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:55:48 -0500 (EST) Received: from athame.dynagen.internal(localhost[127.0.0.1]) (1579 bytes) by csl2.consultronics.on.ca via sendmail with P:esmtp/R:bind_hosts/T:inet_zone_bind_smtp (sender: ) id for ; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:55:47 -0500 (EST) (Smail-3.2.0.114 2001-Aug-6 #5 built 2002-Mar-26) Received: (1210 bytes) by athame.dynagen.internal via sendmail with P:stdio/R:smart_host/T:smtp (sender: ) id for smythe@example.com; Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:55:46 -0500 (EST) (Smail-3.2.0.111 2000-Feb-17 #5 built 2000-Apr-12) Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 17:55:46 -0500 From: Greg Lamb To: David Smythe Subject: heard back from Gary Message-ID: <20021101225546.GA2326@athame.dynagen.on.ca> Reply-To: Greg Lamb Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Organization: Dynagen Consulting Limited Hi again: Gary is "excited" that his method is in mainline bogofilter now. Especially for someone who is fairly free with their address. You never know what someone is going to use for an auto-responder when you subscribe some email-newsletter. This is just one example. What I liked about Mail::Audit when I saw it was the simplicity of how it wrapped up various functions. The one thing that I have learned so far about email filters is that: 1 -- bouncing mail back to spammers only blows up your mail-queue. 2 -- Having a queue of 2700 emails is a real pain. 3 -- If you are going to blacklist someone, do it /dev/null style 4 -- Whitelisting might be better, add auto-replies to confirm that the Sender was not tossed into the bit bucket. 5 -- with bogofilter and spamassassin (not spamd) I can only manage about 1 email per second overall. I backed off from spamd because they have so many warnings about the potential problems with running as root. I decided since I'm not running a major email server I can push this back to the slower, yet potentially more secure spamassassin. Do you know where spamd puts the auto-whitelists? I couldn't find them. That was the other reason I went to spamd. Mail::Audit is a tool that any spam-combatant should be aware of. -- poisoned coffee, n.: Grounds for divorce.
