Lecturing 2005
University of Auckland course PHIL305 Advanced Logic
(Senior level undergraduate class teaching, Course Coordinator)
In this class I covered the techniques and philosophical significance of modern logical theory, with the aim
of providing a level of understanding of these topics sufficient
for an appreciation of Godel’s celebrated proof of the incompleteness of arithmetic. Along the way we covered
results in model theory, proof theory and some set theory, with a brief excursion into second-order logic, which seemed
to be a favourite topic amongst the students! In particular, I designed the course so that the students
knew the motivations for proving each result we looked at, so that by the end of the class they could take away
a genuine knowledge of logic, rather than a mere ability to regurgitate results.
Lecturing 2003
University of Auckland course PHIL105 Critical Thinking
(Undergraduate class teaching, co-taught with Karen Riley)
This class is an introduction to informal logic, with the main focus being the evaluation of arguments. My half of the course
concerned ways arguments can go wrong - we ran through the various fallacies with examples largely drawn from
recent newspaper items, particularly letters to the editor. The students were tested on LSAT examples at the beginning and
end of the course, with the pleasing result that studying the subject matter of the course
increased their average
scorces 60%. So if I don't have much success on the philosophy job market, maybe KAPLAN will consider hiring me?
