Hopefully, this section will be expanded, but right now the information about other areas is scarce. According to instructors of the Khumbu climbing school, there is an ice climbing area near Portse (Portse corner), with a 3-pitch WI5 route. Also an ice climb is said to be found above Periche.
Many areas are still totally unexplored. For example, from the trail from Namche towards Tyangboche one can see many ice flows on the north-west slopes of Thamserku. The access to this ice from below might be quite difficult although woodcutter's paths might help aid one through the jungle. However, there is a high yak trail traversing these slopes at ~4000m which may provide an access to at least some climbs.
With many ice flows in full view from main trekking routes having not been climbed, what can be said of side valleys not visible from popular trails or remote areas such as Lumding Khola? Those may still hide amazing ice routes waiting for you.
One of many ice flows on north-western slopes of Thamserku. The yak trail probably passes above this flow. |
