Song of the Week

1 November 2005: Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything
I've been in a musical funk lately, nothing has really excited me for the past few months, as evidenced by my lack of Song of the Week updates. I picked up Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary on a whim. I'd heard good things, but hadn't heard the album. This is the first album in a while that I've felt like listening to over and over. Choosing a song from this was hard because there are so many good ones, practically the entire album is in the running.

27 June 2005: Youth Group - Last Quarter
Youth Group reminds me of Death Cab for Cutie. There are obvious differences, that I haven't really been able to place in the context of comparisons to other bands. Skeleton Jar has been in heavy rotation since I purchased it a week or so ago. This is one of may favorites from the album. It's also the shortest song on the album, and one of the catchiest in my opinion.

16 May 2005: Stars - Calendar Girl
I absolutely love the Stars album Heart. Based on that album I picked up Set Yourself on Fire recently. This is one of my favorites off of that album. I like the mix of male and female vocals in Stars songs, though this song is predominantly female vocals. I have a soft spot for slow melancholy songs, and this spot fits the bill.

24 April 2005: The Decemberists - We Both Go Down Together
I first picked up Castaways and Cutouts, The Decemberists' first album, based on Pitchfork's comparison to Neutral Milk Hotel, though I don't find the comparison to be terribly accurate. The Decemberists have consistently released brilliant albums with songs about mariners, prostitutes, and chimney sweeps. Their newest album, Picaresque, is more current in some of the subject matter, but the songs are still as well crafted as ever. This week's Song of the Week is one of my favorites from Picaresque.

11 April 2005: Death From Above 1979 - Sexy Results
Ward recommended Death From Above 1979 to me. This album (You're A Woman, I'm A Machine) really hooked me today when I listened to it while dissecting tetrads. As a whole, the album is much more "metal" than I've been into in a long while, but damn if it doesn't kick a whole lot of ass. Sexy Results has more of a dance feel than the rest of the album. Combine the beat with the lyrics that ooze testosterone soaked sexuality, and you have a song of the week.
