foldershare

Folder share changed my life. I have a PC at work and a mac laptop at home and I need files to be in both places. I used to try and copy the files I was going to work on at home, and then move the new files from home back to work. Disaster. Foldershare lets you sync folders across platforms as long as both computers are connected to the internet. It's quick, it's reliable. There are some issues if you're trying to sync a folder with more than 20,000 subfiles, but Foldershare is so worth it, that I purposely choose a non-optimal file structure to make sure foldershare can sync the files I need.

gmail/google calendar

This software is a solid choice if you have split computing needs, and need a centralized mail and calendar program you can access from any computer. Google calendar has toggle-able view options which is essential, and interfaces with gmail to send reminder emails nicely. At first I was skeptical of gmail's "search don't sort" philosophy, but I'm now hooked. Sometimes I need a sort function, but ultimately the ability to search through email with a speedy google engine is valuable at least 10 times a day.

VersionTracker

This is a website that lets you search for programs (mostly freeware) to solve your software needs. For example, I use "Overflow" which is a (fabulous) program for macs that lets you organize a bunch of quick launch icons, e.g. your applications, websites, folders, etc, with a very slick interface. VersionTracker has mac and pc options. If you need a piece of software to solve a task, check this website out.

iWeb

This is a website maker that has an interface like powerpoint (keynote actually, if you're a mac user). Critically, you can place information where you want very flexibly. It's the best website program I've seen in that it's intuitive to use without being so constraining that you have no ability to make a creative and unique looking page. (I made this website using it.) I'm impressed. If you haven't made a website yet because of software limitations... this is the program for you.
