D1. Amber and Glass Rods with Tinsel

ELECTROSTATICS - Electric Charge

An amber rod rubbed with fur is charged negatively. The rod is brought into contact with tinsel. The tinsel becomes charged and flares out. Bringing the charged amber rod close to the tinsel repels the latter. The positively-charged fur, however, attracts the tinsel. A glass rod rubbed with silk is charged positively and also attracts the tinsel. Touching the tinsel discharges it. The demonstration can be repeated starting with the glass rod. Ref: hb x 1
