2.00b Toy Product Design
Sketch Tech Workshops
Overview
2.00b will be offering workshops in various technologies that may be helpful in making your sketch models. Each student should sign up and participate in at least one sketch tech workshop. Attendance at one workshop is expected in lieu of lecture on Monday, April 3. Students may sign up for more than one workshop if there is space available after every student has had a chance to sign up for one workshop.
Logistics
The workshop topics and schedule are below.
Each student is expected to sign up for and attend at least one workshop.
Workshop Offerings
Large capacity workshops These workshops can accommodate a large number of students. You may sign up for any number of these. Registration is first-come, first-serve until the workshop fills.
- Designing for 3D Printing with Jordan Tappa (signup): Made your Toober, so you think you can CAD now? Come to this workshop to learn what the top mistakes were in the Toober CAD files submitted by students that the 2.00b staff fixed before printing your models. Learn better CAD practices for when you'll design your own toy prototypes.
Monday, Apr 3, 3:30-5:00 PM, Rm 10-250
Please bring your laptop with Fusion 360 installed
- Basic electronics with Victor Hung (signup): You've gotten your feet wet in electronics with the Toobers project. Want to learn a bit more? In this workshop we cover using the Arduino Uno, buttons (in more detail), servo motors, relays, LED strips and more! You'll receive an additional kit of electronics components that may be useful for your toy prototypes. Highly recommended that at least one member of each team attend this workshop!
Monday, Apr 3, 7:30-9:30 PM, Rm 1-390
Please bring your laptop with Arduino IDE installed and your electronics toolkit (e.g., wirestripper and wire, NOT your Toober)
- Designing for CNC Machining with Sam Ihns (signup): The CNC router is a very powerful shop tool, used to create anything from guitars to parade floats. Learn how CNC tools operate, see some examples of past toys that use the technology, and learn how to best design your toys to take full advantage of CNC machining!
Thursday, Apr 6, 7:00-7:45 PM, Rm 3-270
- Inclusive Design Principles with Shayna Ahteck (signup): Universal design and accessibility features make everyone's lives better! We'll talk about intentionally designing toy features for kids of all abilities. You'll get some hands-on practice with adapting existing toys with bigger, easier to press switches.
Thursday, Apr 6, 8:00-9:00 PM, Rm 3-270
Lower capacity workshops (signup) These workshops accommodate fewer students at a time. You may sign up for at most one of these workshops initially. After noon, Monday, April 3, you may sign up for any number of these, space permitting.
- Resin casting with Victor Hung: One technique for making parts, especially multiples of the same part, is to make a mold and then cast it. In this workshop, you'll make a silicone mold and then create a resin cast.
Capacity: 20 per session in Rm 3-442
