First Design (Munhee & Kartik)

Prior to the current design, a clam shell "Eyeglass case," in which the button is in the center, was considered.

Below is Munhee's photorealistic rendering of the first scanner design:

The scanner opened from the center via the green sliding peices, similar to that of the current design. The main difference was in the button location and design. In this case, the button was spring loaded and placed in the middle (as seen below). The case below contains all of the same critical components as the current design.

In this case, the button is holding the two green sliding pieces together in the center. Once the button is pushed, both sliding pieces are released and move out from the center as seen below. The spring mechanism and the movement of the sliding pieces are the same as the current design

A sketch model was made by 3D-printing to test this design. Unfortunately, while final testing, the sketch model broke apart, but below is a photo of a revised sketch model that demonstrated the spring loaded opening/closing mechanism of the scanner via rubberbands.
The main lessons learned via this sketch model was that, the springs that we had were too strong and the supports that held the springs were too weak. In the current design, the spring holders have been reinforced and springs that are not as stiff will be used.
