I would suggest mounting the laser recessed into the handle. By having it proud, that makes it vulnerable for poking, bending, etc. The choice of would has been addressed (because of budget), but I would recommend a final choice of aluminum. It is easier to machine. In the case of wood, wood screws do not allow a long term solution for maintenance. Once these screws are taken in and out more than a handful of times, they will no longer be effective. I would investigate tee nuts for this application.

for the touch sensor, you should look into something more robust and long lasting than copper tape. if people are supposed to touch this frequently, then you should think about maintenance and how it will wear over time.

Requiring the guests to touch all of the handles is an added complexity. Is it worth it? You are adding 5 individually sensed parts to fabricate, wire, program, potential repair, etc. I would not recommend adding this feature as I believe it may do more harm than good!

It was great that Carolyn and team researched the average height and incorporated that into the design.

The design of the handle is very interesting. If there were only two people or three people on the team, I wonder if they would hold the handle differently. The middle portion would have to be rather thick so that the guests would hold on to each side with their hands. Else they might be tempted to put the middle portion between the middle and ring finger and miss the sensors entirely. This could be solved with some kind of indication that hands MUST go to a certain spot.

You might want to consider making the actual handle part (the part where the players are supposed to hold it), out of something other than wood. Wood has the potential to cause splinters, and since it's something that people will definitely be grabbing it might not be the best option.
