Quality and thoroughness of human-use analysis and improvement suggestions

Reviewer 1:

The break down of the function of a vending machine was helpful and something that not everyone thinks about off the top of their head. The analysis of users and what they want from a vending machine was thoughtful, although I would have personally liked to see a short paragraph quoted from you or one of your friends who are still in college/ grad school about their experience using vending machines. Your idea of putting healthier snacks in vending machines because millennials are more health conscious was very interesting. The problems that you mentioned users currently have with vending machines are all very relatable to me and my previous experiences. However, you only suggested one solution that would solve all problems. Although a smart vending machine with a 2-axis robot sounds very appealing and solves all the problems you mentioned current vending machines have, it sounds a little pricey, especially if you're suggesting that we should get rid of all the current vending machines that exist in the world. There might be better ways to improve the current ones to create a better user experience. I would have liked to see a solution to each of the problems you mentioned (for example, offering a credit card reader to offer more payment options, putting a gps in the machines and allowing them to show on google maps, etc). You also didn't mention the sources for your research.

This was extremely thorough and I think you covered all of the current features, the process of using a vending machine, and the current problems with them well. User surveys were a great way to get primary data that I think added a lot of legitimacy to your study.

If I had two pick two areas to improve, I would say it would have been nice to take pictures of a single person going through a vending machine on campus to keep continuity and show it in real life. Maybe even showing pictures of the different vending machines across campus and pointing out their pros and cons would have been a good starting place!

Second, maybe showing a little secondary research and showing what the top of the line model currently looks like would be a good reference point to look at on your final page when recommending improvements. With everything, I imagine vending machines do not have some of the features you suggested strictly because of profit margin. While outside of the scope of this project, it would have been good to at least point out barriers to improvement.

Reviewer 3:

Very thorough analysis, especially of the needs, problems, and suggested improvements for vending machines.

One suggestion is to interview users. This helps engage the viewer more, and adds variety and changes the pace of the website, which helps keep interest.

You listed quite a few improvements. One thing to help organize that page and to make it more meaningful could be to rank your suggestions, by cost or ease of implementation or compatibility with existing systems. That adds some flow and makes the page more understandable, and more meaningful.

I thought that this was good! I think it checks off all of the requirements for the assignment, and I thought that the subject of vending machines was interesting! One suggestion for improvement is maybe to add pictures/videos of actual users that you observed for the website, because it might have felt more real and the fact that you observed very specific individuals for the assignment would have been more clear. A second suggestion is part of the "Users and what do they want" tab. For the "young adult" category, it seems like you are referring to people ages 24-40, but originally when I first read it I thought it was referring to teenagers (like in terms of YA novels, etc.) so maybe renaming that to something else might make the website more clear! And finally, I think the argument might have been more cohesive if you had specified exactly what type of vending machine you are looking at, since I think that there are some that take debit/credit, have LCD screens, etc.

Clarity and presentation of human-use experience analysis

Reviewer 1:

The introduction to vending machines and what their purpose is and how they function was really clear. The pictures were very nice, especially for explaining how the vending machine works. Although it was clear that they were taken from the internet. Although that's not a problem, I would have liked to seen pictures of maybe you or your friends getting a snack from a vending machine. I think that would have made it more relatable to me. The pictures for every single problem you mentioned were also really great, although for some of them the clarity or the size of the image was off. The website overall was very nice, clean and easy to navigate.

Reviewer 2:

This is a little more pick, the font and some of the pictures did not come through for me in places. I think a little more time could have been put into the formatting to help with the flow. This is super nit-picky though and overall I think it was great!

I think everything was extremely well thought out, topics flowed nicely, and I enjoyed the study! I will look at vending machines with a more critical eye now!

Photos sometimes didn't show up, sometimes were stretched, and often had watermarks. In the future, try to take your own photos! If you can't/don't have time, include a reference that says where you got the photos, and make sure that the photos aren't stretched. Otherwise, website was intuitively laid out.

I liked how you could toggle between different pages of the website very easily from the top of the page, making it easy to navigate the site. I think the "home page" that you have isn't really all that necessary, as it doesn't give much extra information and only has a picture, so it might make the website more concise and clear if you got rid of the home page altogether. The home page also has a slightly different format than the other pages (it has a title at the top, whereas the others do not), so it might have been nice if they all had the same format for some consistency.
