Quality and thoroughness of human-use analysis and improvement suggestions

I believe that Megan provided a relatively thoughtful analysis of the use of a Refrigerator. I especially like the inclusion of the information on the Crisper section and settings, which can often go overlooked as well as the inclusion of information on the natural temperature gradient inside of the fridge. I believe that the review of the user experience could have been a bit more detailed and showed a few more aspects of the use visually. Furthermore, more detail about the differing needs of each user could have been included to show how the changes are beneficial for a wide variety of users.

I think it was a good analysis. It would have been interesting to see photos of the fridge before the use had to rearrange and photos of the actual process of rearranging. I like the redesign as well. I think it makes a lot of sense to create compartments for easy division. The control panel for most fridges needs a lot of work as well so I liked your suggestions.

You thoroughly explained the functions of a refrigerator. I liked that you took the time to explain the humidity-controlled CRISPER slider, and the control panel because I really did not know what they were for, and think other users of your website probably may not know. Your pros and cons list under "Considerations" was thorough too. I think you identified several real problems that I and some of my friends have complained about, meaning that your user experience research was well done. Your potential design has a lot of features addressing the issues you identified, and the drawing for it is really nice. I appreciated the labels indicating new features because it made the drawing easier to take in.

The analysis begins with a compelling overview that clearly lays out several intended functions of a fridge. In the Features section, these features are illustrated and discussed in more specific detail. This provides both a strong narrative structure as well as a clear hierarchy of exploration, from high-level customer needs to specific design elements. The User Experience and Considerations are cohesive, with the pros/cons in the latter directly referencing the design elements discussed previously, and in particular how intended design does not necessarily match experience. This clear connection makes the analysis flow clearly. The parallelism in showing labeled images in Features and Potential Design provides a helpful comparison/contrast to the reader. One very insightful suggestion is #4 under New Design Features, as it pinpoints a communication detail that was well intentioned but not actually helpful to consumers. One area of improvement for the analysis would be to more consistently provide this "why?" for each of the new design features. This would really help connect each original feature, its pros/cons, and suggested modification. A second improvement to list of new design features would be to provide a cohesive summary. Currently the list appears as very individual - even if interconnected - elements. It would be helpful to synthesize the overall successes and failures of the original design and then again to synthesize the holistic way (or several ways) by which the new design improves on the old.

This analysis of a refrigerator is really thorough and very well researched - well done! I definitely learned a bit: I had no idea about the humidity control! The overview gave me enough background information to understand the purpose and a little history of refrigerators. I really like how the features of the refrigerator (both the current and the redesigned one) were accompanied by a picture with numbers pointing to their location. One suggestion would be to include more of the interviews with users - not necessarily as complete of a use-outline as the one currently included on the website, but quotes and pictures demonstrating what these additional users like and dislike. For example, it'd be nice to see where the humidity slide is in the fridge studied, since it is such an often missed feature. Adding to that, it'd be nice to have a side by side comparison of the fridge studied and the one referenced in the Features tab so that the viewer not only sees the exact item the users interacted with, but also knows where the features of that specific refrigerator are located.

Clarity and presentation of human-use experience analysis

The current presentation does well to highlight the important information without excess visual distractions. there is also good use of pictures to show what is being referred to on the page. I think that a few of the pictures of the refrigerator could have used a slight border as the white of the refrigerator tends to fade into the background a bit. There is also a lack of a consistent indentation/bullet point scheme on each page which can be a bit distracting.

I like that there are links at the bottom of the bottom of the page to let me go to the next section. It would help if you added an arrow or something to suggest direction (even though I know it's pretty obvious what direction it will go), but at present because the links are black and in the same font, some might not realize that it's a link. I like the menu up top! It makes navigation easy if I want to go to the next page.

The flow of information is logical. I liked that you have "previous" and "next" buttons at the bottom of your pages because it saved me from having to scroll back up to navigate your website. Some of your text can be overwhelming (in particular, the text in "Potential Design"). I would consider adding more white space to your text or reformatting it such that it is easier to read.

The website is very well designed. Pages are kept relatively narrow, which is helpful for adapting to various browser/screen sizes. Font sizes, colors, contrasts, etc. are well-chosen to make for an easily readable site. Images are used to illustrate critical points, and are placed in such a way as to grab attention and accompany text without being distracted. The consistently placed menu at the top of the page makes for easy navigation, also helped by the "previous" and "next" buttons at the bottom of each page. One tiny recommendation is to use a more descriptive title than simply "Refrigerators" at the top of the page. Though unlikely that someone outside of 2.744/5wits would see this page, it is nevertheless helpful to consider a variety of audiences who may not be familiar with the assignment.

I like the layout of this website; it is easy to navigate (having the navigation bar as well as the buttons on the bottom really work well for easy navigation between the pages), it is easy to read and it has a simple layout while still looking modern. The text and content centering in the middle of the page really helps this. One minor suggestion would be to make your lists a little more organized and hierarchical; they can get hard to read and follow when there is a bullet point followed by a lot of text. Perhaps having a bullet point with a bold heading and then description indented under it would help in this regard. Additionally, including captions on photos that you reference in text would help the viewer to find the specific photo in question.
