Quality and thoroughness of human-use analysis and improvement suggestions

Great job observing so many (124!) users use the bin, demonstrates that your analysis/conclusions are trustworthy. Would have been helpful to see more documentation or visuals on playing the mechanism itself to fully understand how you interact with the device. For example, what exactly makes the compactor so hard to clean? As well, it is not clear what you mean by reduced cycle time, is that cycle time to compact the trash? I like the idea of disposal chute that would be default open. In a normal trash bin an opening to the elements would not be an issue, but is that something to consider for a more complex bin with other internal parts?

I think Ryan did a good background researching about the compactors and a thorough use analysis by interviewing users. My suggestions would be: 1. It would be easier for me who never uses this machine to understand the function and issues of it if you can clarify the intended way to use this machine. 2. I would like to know how do you identify the area in need of improvement. What actions that make users feel like it's not a good design? I suggest you adding more details to flesh out the analysis part.

Overall it is quite clear. It has a thoughtful user analysis, points out the issues clearly and delivers a detailed solution by handdrawing. However, some parts in the improvement idea and area may not seem logically perfect: 1)The designer comes up with making the trash bin default open. However, he does not fully list potential risk and further improvement plans related to this idea. As far as I think, he should consider people tend to liter more unrelated trash into the bin when the door is default open. Also, I do not think the water could be drained effectively from the cleaning drain. Overall, I think the details of the redesigned part could be improved. 2) No instruction of the LEDs on the redesigned part since he mentioned the meaning of the LED in the improvement area

I like that Ryan pointed out that the features were intended for the buyer of a Bigbelly such as the city versus a pedestrian actually using the system. Thus, seeing how people actually used the Bigbelly will prove how well the designers designed for the average user. The sketch of the Bigbelly system was helpful in identifying the features that it affords. Ryan collected raw data by personally observing 124 people use the Bigbelly system and was able to draw several conclusions based on its usage. It would have been nice if there was a section with what the users he spoke with first-hand had to say about the Bigbelly. This could be done with a section with their quotes. An improvement idea that could be added to Ryan's analysis is it would be nice if a full Bigbelly could redirect a user to the next Bigbelly that isn't full. This way, a user won't have to force their trash inside in an effort to get rid of it.

Clarity and presentation of human-use experience analysis

A beautifully designed website, very easy and clear to read. All functioned well except for the down arrow on the home page did move the page down to the Intro (could only do so from the navigation bar on the top right). Appreciate the use of images throughout the website to make the situation come to life, including the drawing of the big belly bin. If there was a way to visually show the points under Use Analysis (so for e.g. I could see for myself how I can't stick my hand into the compactor) it would've helped with clarity more.

I think Ryan present his thorough and thoughtful analysis in a clear manner and his solutions to found issues also impress me a lot.

The website is clear, concise. It delivers information effectively thorough appropriate pictures and words. I especially like the idea of floating bar on the top of the page so that I could redirect to Intro, Analysis and Improvements easily. One potential improvement is to remove some nonsense words in the website, like the mention of open-source theme of the Bigbelly's website.

The website layout was very clear, had good flow, and an aesthetically pleasing design. The large photos in the background and the black backgrounds help keep the reader interested (it did for me!). The blocky backgrounds helped visually separate the individual sections, so it wasn't relying solely on the headers. I like that one of the large photos was an actual facade of the student center at MIT where I presume is where Ryan conducted his observations. Note: The heading "Improvement Ideas" was repeated twice.
