First Class:
The Official Class of 2001 Council Newsletter

OCTOBER 1997

Fellow Classmates,

The huge hinging doors of our future have begun screeching open to unfold the view of our possibilities, and, like a huge torrential wave, we are coming through at full force—ready to meet all challenges and surpass all expectations!

This is where it all begins. Now is when we define ourselves as the future leaders of tomorrow, and, as such, we must commit ourselves to excelling in every possible way we can. For this, we must remember the importance of remaining involved in the issues and activities that are spinning all around us. Not only must we endeavor to excel

academically, but we must also aspire to develop the important leadership and human skills that will give us the edge when we join the corporate world.

As you would know, this is not an easy task at a place where technology is the central axis of our lives, but the froshcouncil is working very hard to provide you with the opportunity to expand your horizons. During the following week, the froshcouncil will create the specialized committees that will be at the heart of every freshman activity. Join us and become part of the Big Bang that will change MIT forever!

Welcome to your freshman year!

Come Join a Committee!
How to Join a Committee: come to The Big Bang! on October 27. If you absolutely can't make it, e-mail the chairperson of the committee(s) you want to join!

Freshman Life
chaired by Akaniyene Umoh <umoh@mit.edu>
Have some great ideas on how to improve Rush, MOYA, and/or freshman life in general? Join the Freshman Life Committee and turn these ideas into reality!

Educational Policy
chaired by Pamela Mukerji <pmukerji@mit.edu>
Our committee is dedicated to improving the freshman learning experience through various projects, including organizing study groups for every freshman course and setting up communications skills workshops over IAP. Of course, we are always looking for new ideas and would love your input on how we can make our MIT educational experience better!

Fundraising
chaired by Andrew Montgomery <amonty@mit.edu>
Unfortunately, no class parties, study breaks, or other events are possible without money. That's where the Fundraising Committee comes in. We'll come up with cool and innovative fundraising activities for on and off campus. If you want to have the satisfaction of saying, "That event happened because of the money that I helped to raise," then join the committee!

Social
chaired by Abby Pelcyger <abby@mit.edu>
Are you bored? Do you want incredible and awe-inspiring social events for the freshman class? Do you want to help ensure that these events happen? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then the Social Committee is for you!

Community Service
chaired by Laura Rodriguez <laurita@mit.edu>
Here's your chance to make a real, positive difference in the world. Not everything is technology! The world is made of humans too, and helping them is one of the most rewarding life experiences. If you want to feel good while making the world a better place, join the Community Service Committee—where the real difference takes place!

Publicity
chaired by Jennifer Law <jenlaw@mit.edu>
Want to show off your talents? If you are good at art, graphics design, computers, or more, we want you! Even if you don't have any experience in publicity, join the Publicity Committee and learn one of the most valuable skills to have...and have lots of fun!
