Day 20: Image Summary

ImagesCommentary
This aircraft hanger structure is a classic example of "form follows function." The cantilevered structure is a clear expression of the shear and moment diagram. Also note the shape of the central frame. It also reflects the shear and moment requirements for a frame.
This is an example of a forced design. The cantilevered canopy also reflects the torsional requirements of the load-bearing structure.
The stadium roof is also a shear and moment diagram frozen in concrete. The reinforcing steel yield further explaination of the internal forces.
The location of the compresoin flange was altered in this "moment beam" designed by Nervi. It is an incredible stroke of genius to increase the structureal efficiency as well as to articulate this in the interior and exterior spatial expression.
