Structures Walk-About
The Problem
The problem is to identify truss systems and elements that can be found
in our surrounding environment.
The Objectives
The objectives of this exercise are to reinforce the notions:
The Rules
The only material that can be used for this exercise is postcard sized (4"
x 6") white or off-white card stock. The sketches should be lucid with
the free-body diagram clearly indicated on the same side as the sketched
image. A written verbal description of the structural system, structural
element and/or any unique characteristics that are observed should be included
on the reverse side of each card.
The Process
A stroll will be made with your lab section around the campus. Draw at least
one truss system as you stop along the way. These can be discussed with
your TA.
The Documentation
Ten postcards should be completed by the end of the walk and immediatly
submitted.
The Evaluation
The evaluation will be based upon the clarity and degree of completion of
the postcards. It will also depend upon the accuracy of the free-body diagrams
and the lucid description of each of the truss systems.
