Wood Case Study
GIVEN: the photocopy of one of the structures from GOETZ, Timber Design
and Construction Sourcebook (McGraw Hill: Hew York) that was selected in
class.
Part I: General
Describe the following with both text and images to demonstrate a clear understanding of the builidng and its behavior as was discussed in class.
- The structural system
- The components of the system
- The connections of the system
- How it remains stable
- Anything else of interest that you see.
Part II: Analysis
Examine the primary and secondary elements of the structure.
- Determine loads - assume a snow load of 20psf
- Determine Forces by either MultiFrame or beam equations
- Determine Stresses within primary, secondary and vertical elements
How does this compare with allowables?
What would you suggest is the factor of safety for this structure?
- Determine the actual deflection of the horizontal elements
- Determine bearing stresses at two connections - one of which is to the earth
These papers will be collected at the beginning of class on tuesday and they will be graded!
