Wood Case Study

GIVEN: the photocopy of one of the structures from GOETZ, Timber Design and Construction Sourcebook (McGraw Hill: Hew York) that was selected in class.

Part I: General
Describe the following with both text and images to demonstrate a clear understanding of the builidng and its behavior as was discussed in class.

  1. The structural system
  2. The components of the system
  3. The connections of the system
  4. How it remains stable
  5. Anything else of interest that you see.
Part II: Analysis
Examine the primary and secondary elements of the structure.
  1. Determine loads - assume a snow load of 20psf
  2. Determine Forces by either MultiFrame or beam equations
  3. Determine Stresses within primary, secondary and vertical elements
    How does this compare with allowables?
    What would you suggest is the factor of safety for this structure?
  4. Determine the actual deflection of the horizontal elements
  5. Determine bearing stresses at two connections - one of which is to the earth

These papers will be collected at the beginning of class on tuesday and they will be graded!
