Advancing Inclusion and a Sense of Belonging within
Campus Services and Stewardship
In September 2022, MIT released a Strategic Action Plan for Belonging, Achievement, and Composition, which is intended to help the Institute forge a stronger sense of community and pursue excellence by tapping into talent on a global basis. The plan provides a framework to support local and Institute-wide efforts at MIT to promote equity and establish conditions that enable all members of our community to thrive, knowing that their differences are valued.

Work underway and in planning at CSS
At CSS, as in other communities across campus, we are developing strategies and programs that promote inclusion and mutual respect in our offices, workshops, and workplaces.
Established in 2018, the Campus Services and Stewardship Committee for Staff Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion facilitates the process of gathering ideas and creating and implementing action plans for our department. The CSS DEI Committee is comprised of representatives from the Department of Facilities; the Environment, Health, and Safety Office; the Office of Campus Planning; and the Office of Sustainability. The committee meets regularly to discuss and develop initiatives to promote diversity, inclusion, and belonging and to provide resources that advance community knowledge and awareness in this area.
At MIT, we are confident that we can build – through sustained investment, leadership, education, and self-examination – a more respectful, inclusive, and equitable campus where all community members feel they belong and are able to do their best work among peers who value their contributions.
