Student transportation and commuter programs

As an MIT graduate or undergraduate student, you have access to a range of transportation benefits, including discounted and subsidized commuter programs that give you the flexibility to choose, day-to-day, how you would like to travel to, from, and around campus. Here’s a quick summary of your benefits:

Public transit pass (T-pass) at a discount

  • MIT subsidizes 50-70% of the cost of MBTA passes for bus, subway, commuter rail, and/or commuter boat for its students.
  • The various pass options include monthly passes or bus/subway semester passes.
  • You can download the MBTA Go app for real-time bus and subway service information.
  • See what you can save!

Personal Wheels (PWs) at MIT

PWs are bicycles, scooters, hoverboards, skateboards, unicycles, in-line skates, and other self-balancing, non-medical personal transport mechanisms, with or without motors and/or batteries. MIT encourages alternate modes of transport!

  • Check out the Personal Wheels guidelines for vital information about safely operating, parking, and storing your PW on campus.
  • Need to tune up or repair your PW? Look for one of the eight fix-it stations around campus and keep your bicycle in good shape. Or take advantage of on-demand bike repair through NEMO.
  • MIT’s page of Urban Street Safety Tips will help you learn strategies to navigate the city streets while safeguarding yourself and others. MIT also offers a PW Safety Quiz to help you brush up on your skills and possibly win a free bike lock!
  • Register your PW to deter theft or facilitate the recovery of your PW if it is stolen. Registered non-motorized PWs can use the secure storage areas managed by the Parking & Transportation Office.
  • Stay in the loop by joining the MITBike email list to get and share information and tips on biking to, from, and around campus.
  • Need help with bike repairs? Visit the MIT Bike Lab, a free, volunteer-run shop where MIT community members help each other with maintenance and basic repairs.
  • Grad students — get involved in bike safety! The GSC Bike Safety Working Group collaborates with MIT and local governments to improve safety for vulnerable road users.

Short-term bicycle or vehicle rentals

  • Interested in a bike-share program? Register for a Bluebikes membership as part of the MIT group, and you’ll receive a substantial discount (over 50%) on the annual price. Learn more about Bluebikes.
  • If you have short-term vehicle needs, use one of the Zipcars on campus and pay no application fee, no security deposit, and just a $35.00 annual fee.

Shuttles around campus and local areas for free

  • MIT students can hop on to any of the various free shuttles that circulate through campus and beyond (to neighborhoods in Boston, Cambridge, etc.).
  • Shuttles cover the campus from early morning until late at night.
  • Safe on-demand transportation options are available for the wee hours, too!
  • Need groceries? Free shuttles will take you to Brothers Market, Market Basket, Star Market, Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods, with several travel options during the week. Shuttles also make it easier to shop at Aldi, Cosco, and Target.
  • Use MIT Mobile (online or download to your iOS or Android device) to access shuttle maps and real-time information about each shuttle’s location and rate of occupancy.
  • Learn more on the Shuttles page!

On-campus parking at below-market rates

  • All MIT students (except first-years) who commute to the Cambridge campus can request daily-rate parking on campus.
  • Campus residents have the option of monthly parking.
  • Start a carpool with other MIT commuters and pay a reduced daily parking fee and no annual fee for parking on campus.
  • More than 150 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations can be found at locations across campus.
  • Need parking for a personal guest? Visit the Atlas Service Center (Building E17-106) to purchase a one-day scratch pass that allows them to park on campus.
  • Check out the details for student commuters and campus residents and view current MIT parking rates.
