IAP means Independent Activities
Period. It only exists at MIT as far as I know.
This is a 4-week period during January, between the fall term
and the spring term, when students are free to pursue any of their
own interests.
There are many activities on-campus during IAP. Students can take
intensive classes such as French I, participate in 1-day events
such as Charm School, work on some job, or even stay at home.
Hence, most people at MIT would consider it a vacation time.
Au revoir,
Eladio.
