37 Case Studies Here we present case studies of BESSs integrated in different configurations on research university campuses in The United States. Illinois Institute of Technology The Illinois Institute of Technology deployed one of the first microgrids in the nation in 2008. The microgrid is continuously evolving, now containing 180 kW of solar-pv, batteries, a 10 kW wind turbine, and flywheels. The battery storage system consists of 160kWh Aquion Energy Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) batteries, with a recent addition of a 300kW Tesla battery system. 2 new loops served by the campus microgrid were added in 2021. The BESS was launched in collaboration with Firstlight, AMS, and Eversource, and was touted as the largest public battery storage system in Massachusetts when it was installed. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is consistently ranked as one of the most environmentally responsible colleges by The Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges.
