Decarbonizing the MIT Campus

40 Model In the model, we examined the hourly, monthly, and annual energy load for the MIT campus, potential solar production capacity, the nameplate capacity of backup generators, and the carbon emissions of vehicle fleets on campus. We then calculated the carbon savings for the pilot project and partial implementation of BESS scenarios using commercially available technology today, and carbon savings from electrifying different parts of MIT’s vehicle fleet. We further included information provided by the MIT Alumni for Climate action team’s work on Thermal decarbonization. Key Recommendations MIT leadership should consider the strategic deployment of different Battery Energy Storage System configurations as part of a full spectrum of decarbonization solutions, but focus on immediately actionable items such as building retrofits and on-campus Solar PV systems in the next 1-2 years.
