He first (dis)appeared in H. G. Wells' eponymous 1897 novel, and a century later he's still going strong, the subject of the recent documentary Hollow Man. In between, he was not seen in a wide variety of scenes, ranging from the sublime (the classic 1933 film starring Claude Rains) to the ridiculous (the 1951 film Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man). But despite all this publicity, a fascinating part of his personality has remained unrevealed: his considerable skills as a crossword constructor.
