Huang, Alexander C. Y.  Chinese Shakespeare: two centuries of cultural exchange.  Columbia, 2009.  350p bibl index afp; ISBN 9780231148481, $84.50; ISBN 9780231148498 pbk, $26.50. Reviewed in 2009dec CHOICE.
In the recent spate of scholarship exploring Shakespeare in Asia, Huang's volume stands out as a particularly valuable, fascinating, and sophisticated model for theorizing cross-cultural entanglements, as a book that goes beyond its specific subject matter. Utilizing a case-study approach, Huang (Penn State) considers theater and film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays across China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia from multilocation perspectives, using site-specific interpretations and recognizing both the transformative process of the mix of Shakespeare and (not "in") China and the multiple meanings of "Shakespeare" and "China," so that the former is not merely the plays and the latter not merely the nationality of the audience or performers. In seven chapters, Huang does not give a mere history of Shakespeare in China but rather theorizes the "reciprocal process of revision" of Sino-Shakespeare across disciplines. Huang considers and transcends the anxiety of "authenticity" and gives comprehensive readings of a variety of encounters of Shakespeare: Hamlet performed in a Confucian temple, reading Shakespeare in a prison camp, the articulation of modern womanhood and cultural agency through the plays, xiqu adaptations as moral allegory, to name but a few. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. -- K. J. Wetmore Jr., Loyola Marymount University
