Vice President and Dean for Research

The areas that report to the Vice President and Dean for Research include the departments in the Whitaker College and the interdisciplinary laboratories, centers, and programs.

The Vice President and Dean for Research continues to sponsor annual seminars on research practice aimed at clarifying the range of acceptable practices in conducting research. These seminars bring together faculty, professional research staff, postdoctoral associates and fellows, and graduate students to discuss topics such as mentorship, authorship, and secrecy in science. They are moderated by Dr. Stephanie Bird, special assistant to the Vice President for Research, and participation is Institute-wide by invitation.

Organization and Personnel Changes

Professor Jefferson Tester stepped down from his position as director of the MIT Energy Laboratory on June 30, 2001. On July 1, the MIT Energy Laboratory and the Center for Environmental Initiatives will merge to create the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment with Professor David H. Marks as director. Professor Marks has been the director of the Center for Environmental Initiatives.

Effective January 1, 2001, Professor Michael F. Rubner became the director of the Center for Materials Science and Engineering. Effective February 1, 2001, Professor Jeffrey H. Shapiro became the director of the Research Laboratory of Electronics.
