MIT Basketball Alumni Day
Saturday,
February 7, 2009

Honoring MIT Basketball's great team of 1961-62,
holder of longest winning streak in MIT basketball history

The biannual MIT Basketball Alumni Day is coming up on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Many alumni, former players and friends will be there to enjoy the day. Everyone in the extended MIT community is welcome.

A full day of activities is planned - an inter-alumni game, lunch with the team, shooting contests, a varsity game, and a post game reception for players and, their parents, and much more. MIT President Susan Hockfield will be joining the festivities mid-day to greet returning alumni and their families.

During halftime of the varsity game vs. Coast Guard (about 1:45PM) there will also be a a tribute to the Team of 1961-62, who still hold the record for longest winning streak in our history with 15 consecutive victories. MIT Athletic Director Julie Soriero will preside along with several other dignitaries, including John Barry, son of the legendary Coach Jack Barry who mentored this and many other MIT teams. Also, we hope to have all of other coaches back to late 1940's with us that day, led off by Ted Huechling '46.

After the game, there will be a reception next door in the lobby of the Zesiger Center. Then we can go back to Rockwell Cage to support the Varsity Women's Team against a tough Clark team. Those of you who attended the 2003 reunion may recall that, upon the arrival of so many alumni in the stands at halftime, the MIT women roared back to beat mighty Springfield College in what arguably was the greatest come-from-behind win in the Cage's long history.

If you want to come to dinner afterwards at the Marriot Hotel or participate in the weekend's events, please see the registration instructions below. We hope you and your family can join us.

Thanks,
Bob Ferrara '67, Indran Ratnathicam '98, and Mead Wyman '62 for the Basketball Reunion Committee

If you need help, call Richard Brewer at 617-253-9420. For out of town guests, we recommend the Boston Marriott Cambridge, Two Cambridge Center, 50 Broadway, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02142.  Call Reservations at 617-494-6600 or 800-228-9290. Ask for the best rate available, right now the weekend rate is $149/night. Another good possibility the Kendall Hotel at 350 Main Street, Cambridge. Call 617-577-1300. They often have $99 weekend rate.

This is a great chance to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and see the progress in continuing MIT's athletic traditions. As always, spouses, parents, and children are welcome (and can participate, too). Eighty people came in 2007, when Coach Fran O"Brien was honored.

MIT playing basketball at the first Kainan University invitational in Taiwan

On Saturday, we will also support Coach Larry Anderson and the current 2008-9 team, as they wind down on the final week of the regular season at home at MIT. This squad has been remarkable in its own way. Jimmy Bartolotta '09 capped a remarkable career with a slew of new records.

Several of the seniors were were also members of a great 2005-6 team, which was invited to the very first Kainan University invitational in Taiwan.. The photo at left was taken during the championship game, won by MIT over a highly skilled Taiwanese team. If you'd like to get more involved in supporting our MIT basketball program, please
