MIT built a quick 4-0 lead with easy baskets
from sophomore Kyle Doherty and
freshman Adam Gibbons, but WPI stormed
back to take a 18-8 lead. However, the Engineers went on a
10-0 spurt to tie the game as freshman Eli
Sheets came off the bench to convert several driving layups.
With both teams struggling to score the remainder of the half,
WPI went on a little spurt, as the Engineers trailed by 4
going into halftime.
WPI continued to knock down shots in the
second half as they extended their lead. While MIT continued
to stuggle with turnovers and cold shooting, the Engineers
found themselves down by 10 with 6:30 to play. However, the
Engineers picked up the intensity on defense forcing WPI into
difficult shots as MIT slowly climbed back into the game.
Freshman Mike Huhs and junior Boris
Paskalev (who replaced an injured Doherty)
were instrumental in leading the comeback charge, with several
offensive rebounds and putbacks. MIT still trailed however
53-51 with under 0:20 remaining. After an Engineers foul,
WPI only converted 1 of 2 free-throws. With the Engineers
down by 3 points, Gibbons used a
one-handed floater from behind the arc that fell through as
time expired, sedning the game into overtime.
Freshman Danny Kanamori
got the Engineers going in overtime as he was able to drive
the lane on consecutive possessions for easy layups. Gibbons
and Huhs also scored for the Engineers
as they got enough stops down the stretch and made enough
foul shots to pull out the win.
