The Neural Control of Vision

P. Ongoing Research

Ongoing research in the Schiller laboratory on the visual system is engaged in two major projects: Visual prosthetics, which is described in Section 3 (add link), and depth perception, which is described here. The research on depth perception is carried out both in humans and monkeys. We examine the following questions:

  1. How effectively are the various depth cues, which include stereopsis, motion parallax and shading, processed and integrated?

  2. Which visual areas are involved in the processing of stereopsis, motion parallax and shading?

  3. How does brain organization differ in intact and stereo blind subjects?

To answer these questions we use three methods: psychophysics, fMRI brain imaging and single-cell recordings. In this section we provide a brief description of the psychophysical and brain imaging work.
