At LSC, there is a lot more of this than in a conventional theater. Hawkinson says that most theaters use large platters onto which the entire film and trailers have been spliced. One projectionsist runs all of the projectors in some theaters, and even simple details like focus can be overlooked. LSC uses a dual projector system, where one reel runs while the next is prepared. Special marks on the film, called cue-dots, indicate when to start the next reel. It might seem labor intensive to thread and align each reel and then carefully watch for cue-dots, but building up and taking down a platter for each movie in a weekend is a bigger job. It takes one to two hours just to build up a platter, and, as Hawkinson says, "who wants to be in the booth for two hours" late Sunday night packing up a two-hour movie?
